What are sick visits?

A sick visit is an appointment with your pediatrician to diagnose and treat an acute illness, such as strep throat or an ear infection. If your child feels unwell for more than 24-48 hours, schedule a sick visit with your pediatrician at Garland Pediatric Practice. They can see your child within the same day to ensure they receive the prompt care they need.

What conditions can sick visits treat?

The pediatricians at Garland Pediatric Practice perform the appropriate testing and screenings to diagnose and treat:

  • Strep throat
  • Influenza (flu)
  • Common cold
  • Bronchitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Ear infection
  • Sinus infection
  • Skin rash
  • Digestive issues
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • COVID-19

Your pediatrician may also recommend scheduling a sick visit if your child experiences worsening symptoms from a chronic condition, such as asthma or allergies.

What can I expect from a sick visit?

At the beginning of the sick visit, your pediatrician at Garland Pediatric Practice records your child’s height and weight before taking their vitals (temperature, respiration rate, blood pressure).

Next, they review your child’s medical history and ask questions about your family history.

They also ask you and your child questions about their symptoms. Depending on the response, they may look inside their ears, nose, and throat to check for signs of infection or illness. Your pediatrician may also palpate your child’s abdomen if they’re experiencing stomach pain or digestive problems.

Finally, they perform testing, such as a rapid strep test. Garland Pediatric Practice is proud to offer in-house molecular tests, a form of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing, for COVID-19.

How do I know if my child needs a sick visit?

While some acute illnesses resolve quickly, many require prompt care from an experienced physician. Your pediatrician may recommend scheduling a sick visit if your child has any of the following symptoms:

  • High or persistent fever
  • Muscle aches or chills
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Sore throat
  • Visible skin rash
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Ear pain
  • Abdominal bloating
  • White spots in the back of the throat
