Lead & Hemoglobin

A quick finger prick at 12 months and 2 years screens for lead exposure and anemia — two problems easiest to fix when caught early.

Overview

Lead and anemia rarely show obvious symptoms early on, yet both can quietly affect how your child grows, learns, and feels. We screen for them with a simple finger prick at 12 months and again at 2 years, the ages when the risk matters most.

Both tests run right here in the office, and results come back in about five minutes. That means your provider can read them and talk through what they mean before you head home — no second trip, no waiting on a lab call.

Lead is especially harmful to young children, whose bodies absorb it more readily than adults', and common sources include paint in homes built before 1978, water pipes, and some toys. The hemoglobin test checks for anemia, when the blood carries too little oxygen and energy and growth start to lag. Catching either one early keeps small concerns from becoming lasting ones.
